Who Should Study this Course?

Grammar is a part of first year English syllabus. It contains about one-third of English syllabus and marks. Every student who is studying 1st year English in Federal Board has to study and learn this portion of Grammar to cover complete syllabus. What is English Grammar of 1st Year in Federal Board?

English Grammar is one of the three major portions of 1st year English syllabus of Federal Board. This Grammar is also further divided into various portions. Following are the Grammar topics that are included in the Federal Board’s syllabus of 1st year English.

It is very important that student learn Grammar if they want to learn English. It is these rules that make a language. With Parts of Speech students will be able to learn all categories of words and their according use. Tenses will teach how to put all these words together in such a way that a sentence gives understanding of complete sense. Phrasal Verbs are used in daily life speeches and writing. Letter writing is important for not only students but all professionals. Even in this age of technology, all professional and personal communication is done through letters. These written letters are used in the form of Emails now. 

Paper Pattern and Attempting Method from Grammar for Federal Board

Complete paper of first year English contains 100 marks. Grammar is one of three sections of whole syllabus. Grammar covers from 30 -35 marks in exam. This section of Grammar covers from Question Number 5 – 7 in paper. Questions in paper include following from Grammar:

1.    Make Sentences of Phrasal Verbs

2.    Put Correct Form of Verbs in Given Sentence

3.    Punctuate and Capitalize a Paragraph

4.    Write a Letter on Specified Topic

5.    Translation of an Urdu Passage into English

OR

6.    Write a Paragraph

7.    MCQs from Parts of Speech, Sentence, Clause and Phrases

1 -   Make Sentences of Phrasal Verbs:

In Part (a) of Question Number 5 of English Paper, students are given 7 phrasal verbs. Student is required to make sentence of 4 phrasal verbs. Each sentence contains 1 mark.

In short, there is a total of 4 marks from phrasal verbs given in Part (a) of Question Number 5 of paper.

How to Attempt Phrasal Verbs?

Select 4 phrasal verbs that you can make sentences of. Make sure that a sentence specifies a complete sense. Skill of self-writing will be required here otherwise memorizing sentences to all phrasal verbs can be quite difficult. Watch the video lecture on Phrasal Verbs on instutor.com for more guidance.

2 -   Putting Correct Form of Verbs:

In Part (b) of Question Number 5 of English Paper, students are given 6 sentences with verb enclosed in braces. Student is required to put correct form in 4 sentences of verb according to sentence. Each sentence carries 1 number.

In short, there is a total of 4 marks from correct form of sentences given in Part (b) of Question Number 5 of paper.

How to Attempt Correct Form of Verb?

Follow the same instructions on using markers for heading as mentioned above for Phrasal verbs. First write the Question and part number with marker as heading. On next line, write the sentence number that you will correct. Then in next line write the sentence with correct form of verb. You may also have to use helping verb accordingly in the sentence. Write the changes with marker so the difference is easily understandable. First read each sentence and try to guess the type of sentence as explained in the video lectures of Tenses. Write only those 4 sentences that you know the answer to. 

3 -   Punctuation and Capitalization from Plays:

There will be a paragraph from Plays or Short stories in the Part (c) of Question Number 5. This question contains 4 marks

4 -    Write a Letter:

In Question Number 6 of English Paper, students are given a subject to write a letter on. Student is required write a proper letter following are rules of letter writing with exact format and formal language. This one letter contains 8 marks. An example of letter is:

Question. 6    Write a letter to the editor highlighting issue reckless driving.

How to Attempt a Letter:

First of all, start the letter from new page. Student must follow all the rules of letter writing and must convey full message as directed in subject. It is important that student also must follow the exact format of letter as it carries marks. Make at least 2 – 3 paragraphs in letter. 5 -   Translation of an Urdu Passage into English:

There is given an Urdu passage in Question Number 7 of question paper. Student is required to translate it into English. This translation of passage carries 5 marks.

How to Attempt Urdu to English Translation:

Student must have a good knowledge English vocabulary and tenses. Try to understand one sentence at a time. Read carefully and decide what tense and type sentence is and translate accordingly. First give the Heading of Question Number with marker. In next line write: “Translation of Passage into English”. In next line, start writing the English of the passage in same sentence order as used in Urdu. Don’t write the Urdu of Answer sheet, it is just a waste of time.

6 -   Write a Paragraph:

As alternative to English to Urdu Translation in Question Number 7, student is given the choice to write a paragraph on specified topic. This contains the same score as Translation, 5 marks. If you have the ability of self-writing and you can write on  the given topic, it’s your decision to choose either.

7 -   MCQs from Grammar:

Federal Board students get 20 marks of MCQs that includes Synonyms and short questions from Book One and Three, and Grammatical concepts form Parts of Speech, sentences, clauses and phrases. Each question has four options. From parts of speech, they may give a sentence with an underlined word and ask to identify it. Likewise, they may ask to differentiate between sentence, clause or phrase or may ask their type. Watch video lectures on these topics for complete understanding.
